#TrendyTuesday: Handbag Happy with Fringe

I am always amazed to see the Spring looks showing up at retailers before my Midwestern self is ready to shop for them.  So today, instead of starting to talk Spring clothing trends I thought I might start with an accessories trend I love:  fringe! You can find it on all handbag styles this Winter and the coming Spring Summer season.  It's in cross body bags, bucket bags, totes and more!
Not sure if fringe is for you?  You can add just a touch of fringe, in a tassel, like this cross body bag below.  At $39.99 this bag by Topshop is a fabulous look!  It has a fabulous swirl embellishment and laser cut detail too!
And another favorite pick is the Steve Madden bag with fringe at the sides and the embellished with gunmetal details that will have you thinking of zippers!  It's available in several colors.

Yes, I am Still Paper Crafting with #LauraDenisonDesigns!

For those of you who have been following my blog forever, you may have begun to wonder if I am still paper crafting.  Yes, I am!  My latest project has been a bit time consuming because I made 6 of them!  Every year, my sisters and I exchange a $5.00 gift for Christmas.  It has become a challenge to see who can come up with the best gift at that price and let me tell you, my sisters are some savvy shoppers.  I usually make my gifts and this year I finally got a round to making the Laura Denison Design's Nativity!  To save money on this, I split the cost of the kit over my 6 boxes and asked all my scrapbooking friends for their chipboard.  Thanks to Eileen Strachan, a former Creative Memories consultant, I had enough chipboard for the 5 boxes outside of what came in the kit from LDD.   I just covered the plain chipboard with black cardstock.
It was interesting to me to realize that I had so many wood patterned papers in my stash already.   Who knew?!  I love the wood in the box in the picture above, where I got the wood patterned paper from a prize from a scrapbooking event.  And when I ran out of the wood papers, and began to mix them up for my roof piece on the box below, I thought it was so magically, I wish I had thought of it for my first box!
Laura's box using the standard chipboard and covering it with black cardstock took me roughly a day to make.  So, I actually gave each sister her box this year and told them that they would get their figures next year.  So, sorry no figures to post this year!  Growing up, our family had a clay Nativity set, made by my Aunt.  After my Mother past away, one of my siblings got the well loved set.  I came across Laura's kit and it reminded me of my Aunt's Nativity and had to have it for just this gift idea.  I wanted each sister to have a Nativity made by a family member.  And I must say I have always loved paper dolls, so the idea of paper figures also appealed to me!  I have to thank Laura Denison Designs for such a beautiful kit and allowing me to make multiple versions of the kit under the license agreement as I have 6 sisters!  I do not know if Laura Denison Design's still offers the pattern for this kit, but you can find her site at the link here and request more information.

#TrendyTuesday How to Wear the #ColoredFauxFur

One of my favorite trends the Winter is the colored faux fur.  I love how rich it looks with lace in the same color!  In the look above the deep burgundy is almost purple, so I've paired it with fabulous gold accessories.  You can find this look here.    What a fabulous look for the holiday party, New Years Eve Party, or a Winter wedding!
Here is another lace and faux fur look in royal blue, paired with silver.  The necklace and heels are by Kate Spade and you can find the entire look here.

And if your a woman who love neutrals and black try this look. The dress has black lace with a taupe under dress and the jacket is listed as brown.  Add some red accessories to warm up the neutrals.  And I love the shoe enough that I built the look to wear with it!  Find the neutral faux fur and lace look here.

#TrendyTuesday #Sweater Trends

We all love the sweater, and want the newest trends!  So, what's the latest trend in sweaters this Fall and Winter?  It's all about the hem details:  ruffles, sheer panels, feathers (see photo above) and more!  Here are some tips on how to wear this new trend by figure type.

  1. The Straight figure:  This is a good look for you, because it can give you hips.
  2. The Triangle:  This is helps to balance your larger top, so it is a great look for you too!
  3. The Pear:  Wear this look with the dark color at the bottom, and light color at the top!  Avoid the ruffle and choose the sheer straight panel instead.  Examples, the pear can wear are the feather above (darker bottom), and the fringe at the bottom photo below, with black pants or a darker colored bottom.
  4. The Apple:  Choose a sweater with a ruffle or a silhouette that creates a visual waist line, like the one below.  Find it here.
  5. The Petite:  Choose a mono chromatic look for the whole outfit.  So the the black sweater with the animal print (like the one in the photo below) should be paired with black pants or jeans.  Find all these looks here.

#Frightfully #FrugalFriday: Make Your Own Boot Cuffs!

Need a project to keep you busy between the Trick or Treaters?  Want to get the boot cuff for cheap?  How about making your own from old sweaters!  So, rummage through the closet and hit the Salvation Army Store ladies!  Find out what days the thrift store offers deals.  My local store has a sale on a different color every day of the week.  So if you want red boot cuffs, go in on red day and get half off the sweater.  Here are the steps I used to make the boot cuffs:

Supplies needed
Old sweater with sleeves
2 yds of Ribbon 1/2" or wider (cut in half one for each leg)
Sewing machine
Fray Check

How To:

  1. Cut the ribbon to 1 yard lengths (2 qty).
  2. Finish edges with Fray check and allow to dry.
  3. Mark the sweater 5" from the bottom hem of the sleeve with a straight line, perpendicular to the side fold of the sleeve.
  4. Fold the one yard length of ribbon in half and center the ribbon on the sleeve below the marked line, closer to the cuff.  Match the fold in the ribbon to the center fold in the sleeve, opposite the underarm sleeve. Pin the ribbon in place along line in several places.  I used three pins for each side of the sleeve.
  5. Place sweater sleeve on the sewing machine with the ribbon side up, and the sweater side down.
  6. Sewing the side closest to the shoulder, start the seam at the underarm seam and go around the sleeve being sure not to stretch the sweater.  Stop at the underarm seam being sure not to catch the ribbon ends.
  7. Stitch a second seam on the other side of the ribbon closest to the cuff.
  8. Carefully cut the sweater sleeve above the ribbon, already sewn on, on the side closest to the shoulder.  Above is my finished sweater cuff.
Love the boots?  You can find them here for under $80.00 with free ship and returns.  They have a big fit for wearing an extra pair of socks, but not too big that I can't wear my regular size.  And boot sales have started, find more below the knee boots ON SALE to wear with your boot cuffs here.  Here is classic riding boot, another fabulous pair shown with other items ON SALE.
Try a pair of boot cuffs with these!

Now you can save boot cuffs and splurge on the boots, and if you need to take your shoes off at a friends home, won't they look sweet with that bow?!  Below is the old sweater I got from a scrap booking friend.  Thanks Betty!
